Homemade Bagels

Whew! Has this been a long week or what??? I feel like I've lived through about three weeks this week, it's been that long!!! Oh well, at least tomorrow is Friday and that means two days off from work! Finally!! Now if only I could get all this snow to go away, everything would be just fine!

A while back, I found a recipe on-line for homemade New York style bagels. I've never in my life tried to make bagels of any kind, but this recipe looked pretty simple and had a ton of favorable reviews so I thought, what the heck, and gave it a try. OH. MY. GOODNESS!!!! These are some of the best bagels I have ever eaten! Everybody in the family loved them, including the picky 17 year old who usually turns his nose up at anything homemade. He'll regret that one day, I'm sure!!!

I took a picture of the finished product. Now, don't laugh. My shaping technique really needs some work but I think for a first try, they turned out pretty good!

I made some of them topped with cheese and garlic salt. I also left a few of them plain. I ate mine with some veggie cream cheese. Yummy!!!! I highly recommend this recipe to anyone who loves a good bagel. I am anxious to make these again. Maybe some blueberry or cinnamon raisin ones next time would be good. Click here to get the recipe. When the site comes up, just type in homemade bagel recipe in the search box and it will take you to the link.

I'd like to thank all of you who commented on my last post. It's not a post that I am proud of. But it is what it is. I always struggle with my emotional well being during the winter months. I have talked with my health care provider and we have decided to hold off on the anti-depressants for now. Actually, it was my choice. I am just too scared of all the side effects and I want to try focusing on all the good things I've got going on in my life and see if I can make some changes in some of the things that I do have control over to change. We will see how it goes. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers over the last week. I've really felt them all and appreciate them more than I can say.

I haven't been very creative this past week. I've actually gotten started on a few projects, but just haven't been able to finish anything up. Hopefully, I will have some time this weekend to get some of them done so I can share them with y'all.

Until next time. . .

  1. OH MY DONNA!!!! Those bagels look like Heaven on a plate:O I will have to try them, I've never made bagels before in my life! I agree on holding off on the antidepressants until when/IF you truly need them. I think you have read about me and Cymbalta before and the withdrawal of trying to come off of it is horrendous, I am trying again right now, this is the 5th time in the last yr. I've tried, so we'll see, hopefully I can do it!

  2. Donna,
The Bagels look awesome! I love anything BREAD..Throw in cheese, and garlic. I'm there!
I took antidepressants for a while. After a total hysterectomy @ 44. They probably saved my life, and so did the hysterectomy. I had early stage ovarian cancer, and couldn't take hormone replacement.
Coming off the paxil after 18 months wasn't too bad. I took it long and slow. I had the brain zapps. They took a while to diminish.
I have family members taking antidepressants. They are wonderful when needed.
I'm proud of you trying other things first. If you have to take them, don't feel like a failure.
Good luck to Carmen. Take it very, very, slow Carmen.

  4. Hey, Donna, you don't have anything to worry about with us - winter time can be very tough to get through.
Can we talk about those yummy looking bagels? Wow! It's funny, because yesterday I was looking through my recipe book and was going to make homemade bagels, too, but decided on pretzels! They were good - but not Auntie Annie's good!
    Enjoy your weekend!

  5. My daughter eats a bagel everyday. I can't wait to try these out on her! They sure look good. If you have the directions for the veggie cream cheese, will you share that also?
I can relate to the seasonal depression. I've suffered from it all my life, except when I lived in Florida. Ironically, my blog post yesterday was about some simple things that I do to deal with it. The medication I was prescribed made me sleep all the time, so I don't take it. With God's help and a few remedies, I can function. I know it sounds trite, but God is there even if you don't feel Him. I'm praying for you; I know how miserable SAD can make you.

  7. Hi Donna, thanks for your sweet comments on my blog. Guess what, we got married in Gatlinburg too, before we even lived in the Smoky Mountains! We got married at the Little Log Wedding Chapel in 1999. They actually don't do weddings there anymore (they built a bigger one), but every year we try to go back and at least get a picture in front of it (it's still there luckily!). We live on the NC side of the Smokies and love it. Thanks for stopping by, I'm going to be a new follower on your blog too!
